LB013: Various Artists: Artificial Inelegance Volume Eleven marks the first in what may not be a series of sampler compilations showcasing some wonky glitch-step music. Presented here is a selection from Lab Beat's roster of slightly mysterious producers, including the first, and probably last new recordings for many years by both Actionfist and Master Eveleigh.
LB014: Boomd: Samurai. It is tempting if perhaps not sensible to compare Boomd's style to that of fellow Glaswegians and giants of wonky electronica, Rustie and Hudson Mohawke. Regarding these heros' recent releases however, Boomd's Samurai seems more confident, almost as if it was produced under less pressured circumstances (which seems likely). But the result is far from easy listening; this is the jelly-fish structured soundtrack to your attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.
LB011: Neverslept: Jesus Skwept is extraordinarily funky to the extent that it might accurately be called rude. Boomkat say "Skweee'd-out electro bumpers... ...twitchy syncopation and crisp, crystalline synths like a cheeky Jimmy Edgar." AddicTech | Boomkat
LB012: Planes: Joining Dots follows two short releases in winter 2010. Destabilised, squashy, playfully nostalgic, instrumental hip-hop beats with a meticulously planned, gapless track-list. AddicTech | Boomkat
LB008: Lewing: Stent5 / Prerd70 was conceived way back when Four Tet was amazingly fresh. Lewing put together these recordings, featuring a rare appearance by Gemma who supplies a somewhat melancholy ode to time well-wasted. Boomkat | Bandcamp
LB010: Planes: My Intentions (EP2) comprises distinctive beats, glued together with heavy, plasticised synthfunk basslines, varying from the simultaneously playful and nostalgic, to a suggestion of Pierre Bastien’s seesawing clockwork and mechanical dulcimer. AddicTech | Amazon | Boomkat | iTunes | Play.com
LB009: Planes: My Intentions (EP1) comprises beats, glued together with heavy, plasticised synthfunk basslines, varying from the simultaneously playful and nostalgic, to a suggestion of Pierre Bastien’s seesawing clockwork and mechanical dulcimer. AddicTech | Amazon | Boomkat | iTunes | Play.com
LB001: Master Eveleigh: Plain Cats Glitch-pop and jungle. More interesting than most plain cats, though perhaps not to someone finding this as a result of an impassioned google search for plain cats. Free Download!
